Vancouver Island: My five favourite things

Vancouver Island is a large land mass to the west of Vancouver. We got here on a car ferry and have been living in a small cabin by the beach for a month. Here are my five favourite things about the island.

SNAKES: I have been hunting for a non-poisonous snake here, the garter snake. They live in warm parts of the beach. They eat crickets, slugs and big insects and they love sunbathing in the sun rays. For a while Mum even let us keep a pet one in a bucket!

TOFINO: On the west coast of the island is Canada's famous surf town, Tofino. We went here for a day trip and watched guys surf on long boards. We built a hut in the beach and had dumplings for lunch.

FRIENDS: While we have been here we've made some Canadian friends. One night we went to their house for dinner and had hot dogs. Greta is 8 and Archer is 6.

ELK FALLS: One day we were exploring and came across Elk Falls. First you hike through an ancient forest. After that you come to a 60m high suspension bridge hanging over the waterfall. It was amazing!

GOATS ON THE ROOF: A short drive from our cabin was a place called 'Goats on the Roof'. It was like a farmers market, except with goats living on the roof! It had donuts, ice cream and goat feeding.

We have a few more days here then we are heading back to the mountains for our final two weeks in Canada.

Really nice you made new friends Arlo. Snake hunting is not something you could do at home! ( good they are harmless). I have heard about the ancient forests of Vancouver Island. They are some of the oldest and largest in the world I think. The waterfalls look lovely. Nice to be by the sea for a while….. Tofino looks like a place I would really enjoy too. Big hugs to you, love Gran and Pop
